Capture

As is usually the case in nature, the American White Pelican's beauty of form stems from roots of plain function. The pouched beak is designed exquisitely to capture: a 3-gallon pouch can easily hold a large fish, which will be amazingly guzzled whole.

I have to agree with the form follows function, but they are really cool in flight as well. Great illustration.
